Terry Riley - Cadenza on the Night Plain
Tuning to Rolling Thunder
Kronos QuartetCadenza on the Night Plain is a collaboration between composer Terry Riley and the Kronos Quartet, first recorded in 1984 and revisited on this release from 1998. The composition is organized into thirteen sections; it is largely aleatoric, with players free to choose throughout from a variety of 14-beat modules predominantly in the Dorian mode.
The work evolved from Riley’s idea of a mythic being who journeys across Earth in the night collecting dreams so that they may be redistributed the following evening. This section references the Native American medicine-figure Rolling Thunder.
