Tim Buckley: Song to the Siren - from Starsailor, 1970
Townes Van Zant - Loretta![]()
Townes Van Zant - Flyin’ Shoes (1978): since i’m hobbling these ole bones down to Texas on monday, it was a no-brainer choosing a Townes Van Zant album for this week’s record du semaine. while chatting with my southern host, Gracie Castillo, she mentioned her affinity for “Texas’ greatest poet” and ever since, i’ve been caught in the whole enchantment of Townes-y things: dank-backroom-dingy-alleyway gamblings, weariness walking a dog while drinking varied brown liquids in the dry heatin’ noon sun, angel-less women dancing on rusty wooden floors with the eyes of someone who has yet to find a body to place their odd loves on, and all those old hills out west that look like vagrants defeated by all the things they tried to carry. i’m caught in the Texan spirit… and this album is just my kind of voodoo.
Begin by closing your eyes. Now see yourself holding a newborn. Gazing down at this tiny, helpless being, you feel an upwelling of love—that’s your heart resonating with the universe; recognizing absolute purity; humbled by pure potential. Fast forward five years. The child is a mockery of your personality. Yet, beyond the nose rings and ill-advised tattoos, you still see the perfect divinity you once held in your arms. As you watch them repeat your mistakes, repeatedly, all you want is to help them remember their perfect nature. Fast forward twenty years. The overgrown child despises you and blames you for all its pain and misery, yet all you see is its unblemished godliness. Your only desire is that they find their way back to what you never stopped seeing. Now open your eyes. Look at everyone you see in exactly the same way—with A Mother’s Eyes. Practicing it in adverse conditions like crowded subway platforms in the middle of summer will increase its efficacy tenfold. Be skillful and don’t freak people out with A Creep’s Eyes.
If one person can blow up the world, doesn’t it stand to reason that one person can save it? Ninja Yogis & Yoginis, your time is NOW.
